  • Press release

For its last show in the gallery space on Prinsengracht, Martin van Zomeren is pleased to present ‘Folded Variations’, a recent body of works of Katja Mater.

For the series ‘Folded Variations’, several copies of the same photographic print were repeatedly folded, transforming them from three-dimensional objects into flat surfaces and back again. When folded, the prints showed new, but reasonably consistent, images. The images on the prints consist of multiple exposures on a single negative, showing the process of painting a paper object.

Katja Mater is currently participating to the Wiels Residency Program and she previously attended ‘The Ateliers’ (2003 - 2005). Her work has been exhibited throughout Europe and the US including shows at Marres, Maastricht (2013), Huis Marseille, Amsterdam (2013, 2011), Stedelijk Museum ’s-Hertogenbosch (2013), La Casa Encendida, Madrid (2012), De Vleeshal, Middelburg (2012), Temporary Gallery, Koln (2012), Centre d’Art Contemporain, Genève (2011), , Nest, Den Hague (2011), FOAM – Photography Museum in Amsterdam (2011, 2009, 2008), the Dutch Photography Museum in Rotterdam (2009), ‘Principle Matter’ at V&A gallery, New York and Higher Pictures, New York (2008), Stedelijk Museum Bureau in Amsterdam (2007), the Gagosian Gallery in conjunction with the 4th Berlin Biennial (2006).

‘Multiple Densities’, a catalogue bringing together Mater’s works made between 2010 and 2013 was published by Roma Publication in 2013.
